The newest Image book called “Unearth” wastes no time setting up its moody premise.
Writers Cullen Bunn and Kyle Strahm deliver a horror themed comic that takes its cue
from recent movies such as “Annihilation.”
The story opens in a small town in Mexico where a team of Doctors and a Solider have
arrived to investigate what appears to be a virus of some kind. One that leaves its victims a
bloated and bloody mess. The military wants to find out what has been happening at various
sites before the situation spirals out of control. Add in some exotic monsters, a Doctor who is
distracted by nightmares, and a hot head Lieutenant and you have an enjoyable first terror
filled issue.
Writers Cullen Bunn and Kyle Strahm deftly handle characterization while advancing the
Plot. The story moves at a brisk pace without sacrificing any of the monster action.
Artist Baldemar Rivas gives the book a unique look. Each character has distinctive features
and his Monster designs look like they escaped from a big budget horror film. The art compliments
the tone set by the writers.
The rest of the creative team add to this satisfying first issue.
“Unearth’ is a horror comic that delivers.
