The first footage for a new zombie flick features Matt Smith’s return to genre film alongside Natalie Dormer and Stanley Tucci in the trailer for the action-horror film Patient Zero. The trailer is chock-full of zombie-movie tropes: an apocalyptic wasteland, underground government experiments in a dreary bunker, and a seemingly deadly, incurable contagion, for which the pair, in a desperate race against time, try to find a cure.
The trailer has plenty of reminders of earlier zombie films that fans of this sub-genre will recognize.
Against the backdrop of humanity’s battle against intelligent, adrenaline-fueled creatures, Patient Zero stars Smith as Morgan, who, after being bitten, realizes he’s asymptomatic and can communicate with the infected. As a result, he’s the best hope for the last survivors to find Patient Zero and a cure. Soon, he and partner Dr. Gina Rose (Dormer) stumble upon a zombie who retains full human function and coherence (Tucci) but comes with an agenda. Tucci’s character views the infected as the next evolution of humanity with himself as leader of this new step in development.
Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky (Anatomy, Deadfall), Patient Zero arrives Aug. 14 on demand and Sept. 14 in theaters. The film is rated R.
