Based on the sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech
takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the
technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle.
Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves
of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of
giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known
as protoculture, and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two
young pilots.
Robotech was an animated series during the 1980s from
Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions.
Lawrence Kasdan, the noted screenwriter behind
Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the
Lost Arkwill be
the new writer for the adaptation of the American cartoon based on three Japanse anime series. (The original American series drew from three
unconnected Japanese series, but somehow managed to make them into a
coherent storyline.)
Tobey Maguire is producing through his Maguire
Entertainment for Warner Bros and is apparently eyeing the lead role.
WE SAY
More ‘Eighties nostalgia! The original series ran 85
episodes and did a lot to popularize anime outside Japan. Today
Robotech is fondly remembered today by twentysomethingers who watched
it as kids. But will mainstream audiences go for another giant robot
series?
