Starship Troopers: Traitors of Mars is the 5th film in the Starship Troopers series (now celebrating its 20th anniversary) and the second to be done in full animation. This film also marks the return of two original actors from the first film. Casper Van Dien reprises his role as Johnny Rico from the first and third film and Dina Meyer reprises her role as Dizzy Flores from the first film.
Rico has been transferred to Mars where he is training a raw group of new recruits. Unknown to everyone except the ruthless Sky Marshall Amy Snapp, a hive of bugs is growing deep within the bowels of Mars. As Snapp launches a massive assault on the Arachnid quarantine zone, Mars is left nearly defenseless. Rico has no choice but to take his green recruits to Mars and battle the bugs even though they are hopelessly outnumbered.
Snap meanwhile convinces the populace that the only way to defeat the bugs on Mars will be to destroy the entire planet with a Q-Bomb. Rico and his crew must somehow find a way to deactivate the bomb and escape from the surface before they are overrun by the bugs.
The Starship Troopers series has always been the very definition of fun, mindless action. Like a video game come to life, load up the troopers and blast away at assault after assault of bugs. This time out, Rico has to deal with fresh recruits who have gotten themselves killed time and time again in computer simulations, often by their own stupidity. It’s fun to see the group come together and be galvanized by their will to survive the bug’s attack. The political intrigue on Earth with Sky Marshall Snapp and her machinations to increase her political power provide just enough plot depth to give you a break from the non-stop battle on Mars.
The animation is surprisingly well done. The character models are tremendous and you almost forget you are watching an animated feature as they are so life-like in appearance. Probably to keep costs down there isn’t a wide variety of but types. It’s basically the arachnids and the plasma shooters but those also look fantastic.
Starship Troopers: Traitors of Mars is no classic but fans of the series or of military Sci-Fi will definitely enjoy the film.
