Okay, its that time of year again and today marks the start of San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), so we expect some big news regarding genre productions along with about a zillion new trailers, but this is huge. I think we can all agree that when the announcement is that possibly the most excellent science fiction animated series ever is going to return with all new episodes, it’s a BFD.
That’s right, Lucasfilm took the entire Star Wars fandom by surprise earlier today by announcing that it was bringing back the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars from cancellation. The announcement arrived accompanied with the arrival of a new complete trailer, which packs a whole bunch of surprises.
The trailer starts out with a dark tone; a reminder that war is hell and a life-and-death business that not everyone will survive. This segment of the trailer gives way to the moment that fully brings home the news, with some familiar images including the soon-to-be Empire fleet. The trailer soon makes it clear that this is an entirely new adventure, with the beloved cast from the original series. Your favorite clone troopers are there (Rex!), Obi-Wan and Anakin are walking side-by-side and, the moment that gave me the most joy, the return of a personal favorite, Ahsoka Tano. Of course, it will all come down to the writing, but I feel confident that the quality will remain intact.
The shocking cancellation of the series after Season 5 left many fans disappointed, especially given the cliffhanger they were left with. Now, finally, Star Wars fans everywhere will get a chance to see the continuation of a story they never thought would return.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars will return on Disney’s official streaming service. Although there is no official release date yet, the streaming service is expected to launch sometime in 2019.
