The eagerly awaited first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home is here and reveals the screen debut of Marvel’s super-villain Mysterio for the first time in his live-action form portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. I suppose we can assume an explanation will be forthcoming concerning the death of a certain Peter Parker, and the circumstances that allow his return from the deceased
Arriving in theaters on July 5, a little more than two months after the sequel to Avengers: Infinity War, Far From Home is the first release in Marvel’s post-Phase Three plans (the studio hesitates to call it “Phase Four”). But let’s address the elephant in the room: At the end of Infinity War, Tom Holland’s teen hero turned to dust on the far-flung planet Titan after Thanos snapped his fingers and extinguished half of all life in the universe.
The US trailer, released roughly one minute ahead of the International cut, spends its opening scenes setting up Peter’s class trip to Europe, including a sequence that sees the young hero deciding to leave his Spider-Man costume behind. Of course, he’s eventually shown wearing it after Nick Fury crashes his vacation to recruit the young Avenger, but we’re left wondering whether the super spy brought the outfit with him.
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Remy Hii and Tony Revolori. It opens July 5.
