Fox is following the current craze a lot of genre TV shows are taking lately of combining a crime drama or police procedural with elements of science fiction.
It may not be the most original approach, but this story about a seventy-five year old disgraced former sheriff brought back from the dead with high tech, cutting edge science, shows a glimmer of promise of not being too terrible to watch. Of course, given the network’s record regarding cancelling series before they really have a chance to prove themselves, who knows how long this one will be around?
The premise is an interesting one as shown so far: Crusty, cantankerous, old, mule headed, retired sheriff James Pritchard (Phillip Baker Hall), who was thrown out of his job in disgrace because he got busted planting evidence in a case, stumbles upon some guys burglarizing his son’s office, they turn the tables on him and decide he has to die.
So they kill him and make it look like suicide. Despite the grim aspects of the story the show seems to deliberately have a lighthearted vein in its DNA, playing on the absurdity of its premise.
Enter Otto Goodwin and his twin sister Mary (Dilshad Vadsaria and Adhir Kalyan as Otto) owners of the high tech .com company Lookinglass behind the world’s largest social network. Mary’s got cancer and is doomed to die but brother Otto, who is a mega-genius and is desperate to save his sister has found a way to resurrect the dead, and possibly save his sister in the process. His technique not only works, but brings back Pritchard (now played by Robert Kazinsky) at about half his age, and with enhanced strength and senses. There’s only one catch, the rejuvenated Pritchard has to return to the tank that resurrected him every 12 hours or its deadsville all over again.
The cast is enjoyable and competent. Production quality is very good and the show has a nice look and feel, the high tech stuff is nicely and cleverly depicted, which as we all know is extremely important when doing this sort of show.
Another aspect of the show is Pritchard’s strained relationship with his FBI agent son Duval Pritchard, (Tim DeKay-of White Collar fame) and his daughter who also may be in danger and could possibly fall victim to the same conspiracy that caused the sudden demise of his father. So it’s up to dad to not only help his son solve the case of the mysterious conspiracy but clear his name and reconcile with his son without revealing his true identity. Where do they come up with this stuff? For some reason it’s not as bad as it may sound. The show, I presume, is meant to be light genre entertainment, despite the morbid elements involved in the story. The series is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, January 13th, 2016.
