The CW has offered up a crossover event for the last couple of years, but this year’s looks like they are really going all the way to try to create something special.
Its no secret the CW is hosting a special four-way event incorporating all of its DCU based series this year, they have been advertising it like crazy and it has been nearly impossible to avoid a mention of it if you are fan of any of their shows. The event is being titled ‘Invasion!’ just in case you missed the part where it involves the arrival of hostile aliens as the chief antagonists. And what threat could be big enough? That would be DC’s genocidal aliens The Dominators!
Anyone not familiar with obscure interstellar comic book storylines might be asking themselves, “who?” Well, try to envision the genetic-tinkering giant Engineer from Prometheus, only as spindly, yellow-skinned, pointy-eared, claw-handed, robe-wearing Star Trek-like villains, each sporting a red circle on their forehead, the size of which determines their individual caste.
First appearing in Adventure Comics #161 in 1967, the cosmos-cavorting scientist species the Dominators would often pester the Legion of Super-Heroes, though they never quite resided in the A-list category of DC Comics rogues. However, the Dominators did eventually become the centerpiece of a 1989 comic book crossover by Keith Giffen, Bill Mantlo, Todd McFarlane, and others called Invasion! in which a group of DC’s players came together to stop their plot to use a potent global WMD called a Gene Bomb designed to wipe all metahumans from the face of the Earth.
This time around though, it looks like they have gone a little crazy in trying to make it something special and memorable for fans of the series that include Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Personally, I have been keeping track of these series and I am a fan of them to varying degrees, some more, some less, and I have to admit a nagging curiosity about this crossover event.
The word epic keeps coming up and its a word I do not take lightly when referring to genre tv and/or movies. So out of curiosity, I have to know will it be as good as they are saying it will be, or conversely how badly will it suck? As usual, all a fan can do is keep the fingers crossed and hope for the best, that it will be a fun and good comics based adventure story that will not be a complete waste of time to watch.
