I enjoyed the rookie season of this unusual, unorthodox series about a supernatural entity that winds up inside the body of a small-town Texas preacher with a criminal past that won’t stop following him around.
During last night’s season finale of The Walking Dead, AMC dropped the first teaser trailer for Preacher Season 2, giving us a look at the new season of the network’s twisted graphic novel adaptation. Spearheaded by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, Preacher started off with an inaugural season that was a surprise to newcomers and graphic novel fans alike.
That debut season was essentially a prequel to events that happen throughout the violent graphic novel, which revolves around a preacher who literally commands the voice of God. It was contained to the small town in which the titular preacher Jesse (Dominic Cooper) lived, and found Jesse trying his darndest to be a good pastor.Season two looks to be a whole lot more of a wild, rowdy, and bumpy ride more action packed than the previous one was. The series spends its time alternating between dark humor and serious drama interjected with some violent moments along with themes about the nature of good and evil
The season ended in a delightfully weird manner that spurred Jesse, his girlfriend Tulip (Oscar nominee Ruth Negga), and his friend and vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) to set out on a road trip to actually find God, with an enigmatic villain named The Saint of Killers hot on their tail. This is the storyline that graphic novel fans know full well, and this Season 2 teaser shows us the delightful mayhem that this imperfect trio will be involved with in the new season to come.
For the uninitiated Preacher is an American television series developed by Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen for AMC starring Dominic Cooper. It is an adaptation of the comic book series Preacher created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. The series was officially picked up on September 9, 2015, with a ten-episode order which premiered on May 22, 2016. On June 29, 2016, AMC renewed the series for a 13-episode second season to premiere on June 19, 2017.
The comics are loosely based on the comics that tell the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer is accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis, the infant product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. The incident flattens Custer’s church and kills his entire congregation.
Genesis has no sense of individual will, but since it is composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, its power might rival that of God Himself, making Jesse Custer, bonded to Genesis, potentially the most powerful being in the universe.
Driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, Custer journeys across the United States attempting to literally find God, who abandoned Heaven the moment Genesis was born. He also begins to discover the truth about his new powers. They allow him, when he wills it, to command the obedience of those who hear and comprehend his words. He is joined by his old girlfriend Tulip O’Hare, as well as a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy.
During the course of their journeys, the three encounter enemies and obstacles both sacred and profane, including The Saint of Killers, an invincible, quick-drawing, perfect-aiming, come-lately Angel of Death answering only to “He who sits on the throne”; a disfigured suicide attempt survivor turned rock-star named Arseface; a serial killer called the ‘Reaver-Cleaver’; The Grail, a secret organization controlling the governments of the world and protecting the bloodline of Jesus; Herr Starr, ostensible Allfather of the Grail, a megalomaniac with a penchant for prostitutes, who wishes to use Custer for his own ends; several fallen angels; and Jesse’s own redneck ‘family’ — particularly his nasty Cajun grandmother, her mighty bodyguard Jody, and the ‘animal-loving’ T.
As you can probably ascertain, it’s an unusual and quirky mix of ingredients that adds up to an oddly amusing and entertaining show. You can see the season 2 teaser below.
