Making a splash at the annual SDCC this year, is the master film maker’s latest offering, based on the classic, seminal, sixties french comic book series, Valerian and Laureline. The movie seems poised to be 2017’s genre hit of the year.
Twenty years ago, visionary writer/director Luc Besson exhilarated sci-fi fans with his blazingly original, warmly sentimental and unapologetically bizarre space opera “The Fifth Element.” Now, he’s back, taking over Comic Con International in San Diego 2016, with the brain-melting first look at footage for his latest universe-trekking epic “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.” As of writing this article, the footage, unfortunately is still not available to the general public.
Based on the classic, seminal, 1960s French comic book series “Valerian and Laureline,” the film stars Dane DeHaan (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″) and Cara Delevingne (“Suicide Squad”) as the titular pair of spatio-temporal agents (think time-travel cops), tasked with protecting the universe from timeline paradoxes that could threaten existence itself.
The film also features a supporting cast full of first caliber talent like Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, Rutger Hauer, Sam Spruell, Kris Wu, along with pop music diva, Rihanna, and others.
Besson has long been one of my favorite film makers, with such modern classics as The Fifth Element (1997), which he wrote and directed, La Femme Nikita (1990), Leon, The Professional (1994), Angel-A (2005), and Lucy (2014) which Besson also wrote and directed, along with popular franchises like the Transporter, the Taken films and many more. His unique style and flair for visual storytelling is nearly unmatched in modern film making.
Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, so far, looks as if it will be no exception to the rule in Besson’s long career of stunningly beautiful, and visually arresting films, that combined with engaging and charming stories, almost always become instant movie classics. Everything indicates this film will be big hit with fans and critics alike, and knowing how studios think these days, may be the beginning of the next big genre franchise.
The movie, for now, is set to premiere June 21, 2017. This looks to be epic science fiction film making on a grand scale, and needless to say, I am looking forward to seeing this film with a great deal of enthusiasm, and, of course, any trailers and other such crumbs that fall our way in the meantime.
We have a synopsis for the movie:
Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner—blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
