With the arrival of trailers for the sixth, and ‘Final Chapter’ of the world’s most successful movie franchise based on a video game, it seemed like a good time to take a look at these films, and their star Milla Jovovich.
First if all let me say these are not the sorts of science fiction films I normally take an interest in. Sci-Fi Horror is just not my cup of tea, with only a few exceptions like, of course, The Alien series, and the classic Terminator films. These sorts of films always seem too predictable, and cliche filled to be enjoyable for me.
The Resident Evil films seems to be aimed at a younger audience, and fans of the video games that form a demographic of a mostly male audience between the ages of 12, or so, and maybe goes as high as 20 years old.
The Resident Evil film series consists of science fiction action-horror films loosely based on the Capcom video games of the same name. Constantin Film bought the rights to the first film in January 1997 with Alan B. McElroy and George A. Romero as potential writers.
In 2001, Sony Entertainment acquired distribution rights and hired Paul W. S. Anderson as writer and director for Resident Evil (2002). Anderson continued on as writer and producer for the sequels, Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), and returned as the director for Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) and Resident Evil: Retribution (2012).
These films, outside of changing a few plot details, and gags are, to say the least, a bit redundant
Despite constant negative reviews, with five films released, the Resident Evil film series is the highest-grossing film series to be based on video games of all time, having grossed US$915 million worldwide. It is set to conclude on January 27, 2017 with a sixth film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, written and directed by Anderson. Despite the bad reviews by critics, the films have developed a cult classic status, and a core of fans and followers
All of the films are based on the same premise, that revolves around the fictional Umbrella Corporation, which acts as the main antagonist in the series, that is a bioengineering pharmaceutical company that creates bioweapons. Umbrella was responsible for the zombie apocalypse, which occurred after the corporation’s T-virus infected the Earth’s population.
The films follow protagonist Alice, an original character created for the films portrayed by Milla Jovovich. Alice, who was once a security operative working for Umbrella, becomes an enemy of the corporation. Characters from the Resident Evil video games also appeared in the film series, including Jill Valentine, Carlos Olivera, Claire Redfield, Albert Wesker, Chris Redfield, Barry Burton, Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong.
Milica Bogdanovna “Milla” Jovovich is a Ukrainian-born American actress, model, musician, and fashion designer. She has appeared in numerous science fiction and action films, and is best known for her role as Leeloo in the French science fiction action film The Fifth Element (1997), alongside Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman. The Resident Evil films have formed the bulk of her career as an actress
Of course, a certain amount of the franchises appeal to its target audience hinges on Jovavich’s physical beauty, and feminine attributes, combined with her appeal as a kick-ass woman up against insurmountable odds. All while wearing stylish outfits designed to enhance her sexiness as he goes about carrying out her grim and violent tasks.
The Resident Evil films mostly rely on a great deal of CGI FX and graphic depictions of violence, gunplay, and explosions one would expect from a film franchise based on a video game. This is not great film making, and depends mostly on the sort of sensationalistic stuff that appeals to a less sophisticated audience with a requisite hint of sexual flavor.
All we know so far about the sixth and final installment in the series is it sounds like more of the same. The synopsis for the film is as follows: Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C.
As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
