Anyone paying attention knows the future of home entertainment is in subscription streaming services and joining the fray in direct competition with Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix is Apple TV. Apple Is jumping on board the current craze for, and popular trend by the studios of bringing science fiction and fantasy to the screen.
Apple TV is continuing to expand their growing number of original programming with an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s classic science fiction novel Foundation. The streaming service, designed by the tech conglomerate has ordered a full series commitment from showrunners David S. Goyer (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Josh Friedman (Avatar 2). The acclaimed novel collects an anthology of connected stories over several centuries chronicling the titular organization and its ongoing dedication to preserving culture in the face of galactic unrest.
As most science fiction fans know, The Foundation series is a science fiction book series written by American author Isaac Asimov. For nearly thirty years, the series was a trilogy: Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation. It won the one-time Hugo Award for “Best All-Time Series” in 1966. Asimov began adding to the series in 1981, with two sequels: Foundation’s Edge, Foundation and Earth, and two prequels: Prelude to Foundation, Forward the Foundation. The additions referred to events in Asimov’s Robot and Empire series, indicating that they take place in the same fictional universe.
A television adaptation of the Asimov novel, originally published as a series of short stories in various science fiction magazines, was originally pitched to HBO in 2014 by Interstellar writer Jonathan Nolan. After HBO passed on the project, Nolan instead developed Westworld for the network to critical and commercial success.
The upcoming sci-fi series marks the latest production confirmed in development for Apple TV after the company first announced plans to focus on creating original content for the service in January 2017. With Goyer and Friedman, the latter joining the production after dropping out of the upcoming Snowpiercer television series for TNT, leading the writers’ room, Asimov’s ambitious story will have some A-list talent helming the adaptation.
No further details are available as to when production will begin but stay tuned to the Sci-Fi Movie Page for updates
