In nine days, Netflix will release an original post-apocalyptic sci-fi film called IO, and they’ve just now unveiled the first trailer online. Directed by Jonathan Helpert, the film stars Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) as a young scientist dedicated to finding a way for humans to adapt and survive on a poisoned Earth, which most people have abandoned for a colony on one of Jupiter’s moons. The film has a certain familiarity due to its very familiar subject matter that has been done numerous times before and done well, so it’s anyone’s guess how fresh it will seem this time around trying to breathe new life into what could easily be stale reworked material.
The trailer starts with somewhat misleading multiple shots of outer space but quickly settles back here on a future earth. The body of the footage mostly concerns itself with depictions of how lonely her existence must be as the last person on the planet. Her determination to remain behind gets rocked by the arrival of another survivor, played by Anthony Mackie, and together the two aim to make it to the last shuttle leaving Earth before being left alone for good. The trailer suggests they must undergo a perilous journey to achieve survival, but it’s not made clear what those perils might be, only if they will survive.
Here’s what the synopsis looks like: Sam (Margaret Qualley), one of the last survivors on a post-cataclysmic Earth, is a young scientist dedicated to finding a way for humans to adapt and survive, rather than abandon their world. But with the final shuttle scheduled to leave the planet for a distant colony, her determination to stay is rocked by the arrival of another survivor, Micah (Anthony Mackie). She must decide whether to journey with him to join the rest of humanity and begin life anew or stay to fight for Earth’s survival.
The film also stars Danny Huston and will be available on Netflix on January 18th.
