I must confess being of two minds when it comes to Gotham; it walks a fine line between camp melodrama and more inspired comics based quality television, and it’s anyone’s guess which one you will get from week to week sometimes. Never the less, I find myself pleased to a somewhat surprising degree, at the prospect of the show’s return in a few days.
An extended trailer for the upcoming fourth season of Fox’s Gotham puts the season’s big bad up front – after a long catch-up session that traces the rise of both Bruce Wayne and his various nemeses across the crime-riddled streets of Gotham City. As the trailer concludes, attention turns to Ben McKenzie’s Jim Gordon and the next villain he will find himself squaring off against: the Scarecrow. Aside from a good look at his costume, the trailer also offers flashes of surreal horrors, likely the result of Jonathan Crane’s fear toxin infecting the citizens of Gotham.
Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Scarecrow debuted in World’s Finest Comics #3 in 1941. The character only appeared in a couple of issues before being shelved for 26 years. In 1967, Gardner Fox and Sheldon Moldoff brought the character back, this time touting his infamous fear gas. Charlie Tahan has played the character on Gotham since the show’s first season – this season will see him finally adopt his nefarious identity.
The trailer also shows lots more, like young Bruce being outfitted by Luscious Fox taking his first steps towards his future self and Selena Kyle doing the same, evolving along parallel but diverging lines towards their destinies as part of Gotham’s future mythology.
The trailer also teases and raises questions about Penguin and Riddler, Butch Gilzean and Barabara Kean and more of the show’s familiar characters.
Starring Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Victoria Cartagena, Andrew Stewart-Jones, John Doman, Jada Pinkett Smith and Morena Baccarin, Gotham will return to Fox for its fourth season on Sept. 21.
