The first trailer for the movie, First Man featuring Ryan Gosling as the first man to set foot on the moon, Neil Armstrong has landed here on earth. Ar first glance the trailer reminded me a lot of another classic film about the space race and all the training and preparation leading up to the earliest missions by American astronauts to outer space The Right Stuff (1983). This trailer reminded me of that film in more ways than one, and that’s not a bad thing, quite the opposite, its a favorable comparison with an excellent movie. It got me to thinking, intentionally or not, that maybe First Man is a remake of that other film.
Also like that other film, this trailer in addition to giving us our first glimpse of Gosling as Armstrong, also spent time focused on Claire Foy as his concerned wife, Janet. The trailer also spends a lot of its time focused on the dangers surrounding the risky Apollo 11 spaceflight. That’s where the similarity seems to end. Unlike that other film that spent its time and attention on several astronauts and their spouses, this one seems to have a narrower scope of interest. Of course, the success of the film depends a lot on how much people like Gosling’s portrayal of Neil Armstrong.
Directed by Damien Chazelle (La La Land) First Man also stars Pablo Schreiber, Kyle Chandler, and Jason Clarke. It’s set to rocket into theaters on Oct. 12.
