A zombie comedy Western! Think Shaun of the Dead
meets The Good, the Bad & the Ugly and you'll have an idea of what to
expect of this straight-to-DVD release.
Two cowboys (James Denton and Saturday Night Live's Chris Kattan in
an occasionally grating performance as the comic sidekick wearing the fruity
shirt) are two cowboys fleeing a zombie sheriff and his posse of the undead. Along the way they meet the legendary
Geronimo's niece, Sue (Navi Rawat), who somehow seems to have read Guns, Germs & Steel, Jared
Diamond's dissertation on why some cultures are ?superior? to
others, more than a century before it was actually published.
Not all the elements in Undead or Alive always gel.
Some of
the attempts at humor will make you roll your eyes, which is surprising
considering that some South Park alumni worked on the movie. The
horror elements aren't that scary either, but as a light-hearted adventure
comedy romp as part of a double bill one night Undead or Alive is
better than the trailer lets on. There are also some decent gags, plus some
okay gore and splatter effects.
What really elevates the
material at hand its crisp, high quality 16x9 widescreen
photography which, when you think about it,
is the only aspect ratio in which any Western should be shot
? even if it is
one featuring zombies.
Add some decent costumes, settings and sets,
and you'd be pleasantly surprised if you only rented Undead or Alive
at your local video shop
because everything else was already out . . .
