One of my favourite releases of 1999, The Iron Giant practically sank without trace at the box office. A pity, because when we watched it I remembered the little kids in the audience being totally transfixed. So were the adults for that matter!

No real breakthrough in animation, The Iron Giant however has a sophistication and emotional core lacking in a lot of today's animated fare. Sure, hits like Shrek and Monsters Inc. may be all post-modern and hip, but its cleverness also means an emotional detachment. The Iron Giant is a boy and his giant robot tale done quite well and earnestly. The kids will love it - and so will you. . .

Unlike the Atlantis DVD, The Iron Giant has a splendid wide screen transfer. It also features some making of publicity material (used for television when the movie came out), but like most such promotional material it is a bit on the dull side and offers few insights.

WORTH IT? Yup, especially since this disc goes for quite cheap.

RECOMMENDATION: It's a good movie and it's going for cheap - even if you don't have kids, it's still worth buying.
