Although
you sometimes wish they would hurry things up a bit, Invasion remains
compelling television viewing.
In the aftermath of a devastating hurricane, a small town in the American
state of Florida not only has to cope with the devastation wreaked by the
disaster but also with the mysterious happenings afterwards. After the
appearance of some unexplainable bright lights falling from the sky, it
would appear that the swamp world of the Everglades is now inhabited by an
alien fish-like species. Even more worrisome is the peculiar behavior of
some of the small town's inhabitants who seem to have somehow changed after
being pulled from the water following the hurricane.
Sure, Invasion isn't particularly original - after all, it's Invasion of the Body Snatchers
but with a modern
X-Files sensibility (the army is also snooping
about), but the series throws up some interesting plot developments that
will intrigue dedicated science fiction fans. Also, the series benefits from
some effective post-disaster swamp land locations, decent acting and plot
ambiguity as viewers are supplied more clues.
Like a lot of contemporary TV shows (think Lost
and Prison Break), Invasion doesn't consist of standalone
episodes since it contains one narrative thread throughout. In that sense it
is actually better suited to the DVD format than television broadcasts since
you can simply slot in the next disc in the collection instead of waiting
till next week's episode to find out what happens next.
THE DISCS: Unfortunately Invasion only lasted one season and
you get the whole series
? all
twenty-two 42-minute episodes
- spread
over six discs. Extra features include the occasional deleted scenes, a gag
reel and a featurette titled Invading the Mind of Shaun Cassidy.
(Yes, the Shaun Cassidy.)
WORTH IT? Yes.
RECOMMENDATION:
Check it out. Invasion makes for captivating
viewing.
