Avatar
has already made $2.6 billion at the box office across
the globe, but it seems that there is yet more money
to be squeezed from what is now officially The Biggest
Hit Movie of All Time Unless You Factor in Inflation,
That Is
™.
This DVD / Blu-ray release is a barebones vanilla
edition with no – we repeat NO – special features
whatsoever. No director’s commentary, no making-of
featurettes, deleted scenes, nothing. It isn’t even in
3-D! (Okay, 3-D on your television sucks and will make
you throw up and get headaches, but it’s the thought
that counts!)
Expect Fox to bring out another “special edition”
again later this year. Director James Cameron has
confirmed rumors that a six-minutes longer version with scenes especially filmed
by WETA will be released in 3-D cinemas in August. This longer version of
Avatar will probably be released as a two-disc affair with
all the stuff serious collectors would want and expect
of a major release such as this.
Why do they do this? Well, to make those same serious
collectors buy the same disc more than once of course!
And no, it’s no “Avatar being released on Earth
Day” environmental concerns at play here – just
rampant greed . . . This disc should have been called
Avarice instead!
RECOMMENDATION: If you’re the type who wants
special features then save your money and wait until
the special edition comes out – probably in time for
X-mas.
If you want just the movie, then go ahead. But you’ll
be sorry when that special edition comes out . . .
