Coinciding with the release of the teaser trailer, Fox has launched the website for Dark Phoenix, featuring the first official poster and synopsis. The first official trailer for Dark Phoenix has arrived. The next film in the X-Men franchise will adapt Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne’s iconic “Dark Phoenix Saga,” which also inspired 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand.
Combined, they confirm speculation from May that X-Men has been dropped from the title of director Simon Kinberg’s sequel, with the franchise name represented only by a stylized “X.” The poster, of course, depicts star Sophie Turner as Jean Grey in silhouette against a backdrop of stars and fire — the latter forming a second “X.”
The film’s synopsis goes like this: In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she gets hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
Sounds like a party. Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film opens Feb. 14, 2019.
