Garrett Hedlund in final negotiations to star as Kaneda
It has been officially confirmed that Tron Legacy star Garrett Hedlund has accepted the role of Kaneda in the planned live action remake of the 1988 anime adaptation of the manga (comic) of the same name.
Rumor also has it that Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter were offered the roles of Colonel and Lady Miyako. It is unknown whether they had accepted the roles.
That Hedlund isn’t Japanese doesn’t seem to bother studio execs. (Expect this production’s casting to be dogged by the same accusations of racial discrimination as the Last Airbender live action movie.)
Akira is set in a future Tokyo. Kaneda is the leader of a teen biker gang who has to rescue his friend Tetsuo from a top secret government experiment. Studio execs probably decided Hedlund already knows how to ride a motorbike saving them a lot of hassle . . .
The movie will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown, Orphan) from a screenplay by Steve Kloves, who wrote several Harry Potter movie screenplays. Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the film’s producers.
No release date or production start date has been set yet.
