Some cool spaceship images . . .
Check out some cool spaceship pics from the upcoming Ridley Scott flick Prometheus below:
Incidentally, the spaceship in the movie is known as Prometheus, but who was he?
Here’s some Greek Mythology 101, courtesy of Wikipedia:
In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a Titan, the son of Iapetus and Clymene, and brother to Atlas, Epimetheus and Menoetius.
He was a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals. Zeus then punished him for his crime by having him bound to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day.
Prometheus’ punishment is quite similar to that of Sisyphus, a king who was punished for being a right royal jerk by being made to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this throughout eternity.
French existentialist philosopher Albert Camus saw Sisyphus as personifying the absurdity of human life and some days you must admit that he might just have a point . . .
Trivia: the spaceship in Scott’s 1979 was named Nostromo, which is the title of a 1904 novel by Polish-born British novelist Joseph Conrad whose short story Heart of Darkness inspired Apocalypse Now.
The spaceship in James Cameron’s 1980s Aliens sequel was named Sulaco, which is the name of a fictional town in Nostromo.
Trivia: Conrad is regarded as one of the great novelists in English although he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties (and then always with a marked Polish accent).
Who said sci-fi movies aren’t educational?
