If you ask Marc Zicree (TNG, DS9, Babylon 5) why almost all of the network Sci-Fi Shows end up south, his answer is as sad as simple: “Because the network suits don’t get it”
His solution to the problem might sound somewhat similar to the idea that got Iron Sky off the ground, but is in fact far more adventurous. Despite the media coverage real crowdfunding played only a tiny part in the finnish dark comedy, most of the 7.5 Million Euro budget was covered by european film funds – the usual way of film funding in europe.
Marc Zicree’s Masterplan on the other hand relies completely on crowdfunding, opening the hearts and the wallets of legions of Sci-Fi fans hungry for good ole space opera without the need for studios or networks.
His “Space Command” Campaign on kickstarter went already through the roof, collecting over 90.000$ in only three days, and thus already funded. But the campaign is still running and every extra dollar will be turned into a shiny vision of the future, designed by visual effects legends like Doug Drexler (BSG) or Mike Okuda (ST:TNG)
In the end the audience will have to judge, if their money was well invested, but Marc Zicree’s enthusiasm rings indeed true and might be a blueprint for a better Sci-Fi future, not on the networks, but on Blueray and DVD.
