I reckon they've tried to walk the fine line between staying true to the original and 'updating' and 'rebranding' the film for the American 'market' (I use ''s for market because we're talking about the market that isn't in love with the original, the people that thought the video for Kanye West/Daft Punk's Harder, Better, faster, Stronger, was groundbreaking). The problem with walking that line is most of the time you just dissappoint both camps.

the people that love the original, like me, with fanatacism, are NEVER going to rate a Hollywood remake in the same league. Regardless of how accurately they stick to the original story it's just never going to happen. Whereas the people that don't really care for the original could potentially be won over either by a faithful retelling or a brutal bloody hatchet job.

Personally I'm actually going to more interested in the stylistic differences, character motivations, cinematography etc. than I am in the story. Cyberpunk bikers and military experiment super-soldiers aren't rare in anime, especially in the 1980's. I've never watched Akira and thought "that film's all about the story",
I've always watched it and thought "that film's all about the style".

I think fans of the original should judge the remake based on that

What do you mean not much has been changed really? Why move the location from Tokyo to NY to begin with? Anyone who'd be interested in seeing this knows the story already. Typical Hollywood BS. Might as well change the lead character's names to Kenneth and Travis. This rewrite sounds like garbage. Please shelf this indefinitely until someone is willing to do it justice.
