Ruby Knowby (Lucy Lawless) made a grand entrance into the episode this week on Ash vs Evil Dead. She is still just one step behind of the “Ghostbeaters”, Ash’s crew, as they were labeled by Pablo (Ray Santiago). She came across the graves of Kelly’s (Dana DeLorenzo) parents and discovered that Ash did not hack up her dad. After a quick back and fourth with this Deadite, Ruby revealed to long term Evil Dead fans that she wields an interesting weapon in her fight against the Deadites. New fans may not recognize it, but she has in her possession the Kandarian Dagger. This opens up questions as to how she got it and when it became separated from the book. Hopefully, we will learn the full story of Ash (Bruce Campbell) and the Necronomicon after he came back from Medievel times. That is not our story this week. No, it is Ash trying to put the genies (the Deadites) back into the bottle (the Necronomicon).
We get a moment’s peace this week as Ash takes Kelly and Pablo to “Books from Beyond”. Ash believes that the bookshop’s owner, Mr. Hawking (Kelson Henderson), can transalte the book and put things right again. There must be a spell to put them back, right? Before things go horribly wrong, Ash reveals that if this works it could be the end for the trio. Ash heads into the bookshop and we see Pablo get to have some quality time with Kelly. In typical horror/ comedy fashion, Kelly reveals she sees Pablo as a brother. Yet, before things get really awkward, Detective Fisher (Jill Marie Jones) walks into the bookshop affter Ash.
This episode flushes out Kelly’s character quite well. An altercation leads Kelly to holding Detective Fisher captive as Ash and Pablo get the plot going. We learn that Kelly owes Ash her life and there is nothing that he can do to unwarrant her trust of him. The plot of this episode deals with Ash asking Mr. Hawking to call fourth a “whimpy” demon who may be able to help with answers about putting the Deadites away. Newcomers to the series get a full backstory to the Necronomicon and some brilliant special effects bring the book to life (check out the clip below). Fans of the Evil Dead saga will appreciate the details as well as seeing a few new pages to the infamous book.
All does not go to plan, again, as Ash and Pablo have to fight one demon named Eligos (Ben Fransham). Now there may be a few camera tricks here and there to make the character even more unusual, but this is a man in a suit with make-up and it is incredible. This character is completely new and frightfully unsettling. A small piece of the puzzle was revealed this week and it pertains to Ash. The answer to stopping the Deadites may lay inside him. Could this be metaphorical? The answers are coming.
Each week, Ash vs Evil Dead has been an awesome candy bar of Evil Dead goodness to chomp on. These episodes may only be 30 minutes, but their ride is completely fun and refreshing. I’m already looking forward to my next bite.
