X-Men
Origins: Wolverine
(2009)
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Liev Schreiber
Directed by Gavin Hood
U.S.
Opening Date: May 1st, 2009
THEY SAY
Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar
– as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers,
retractable claws and a primal fury. Leading up to the events of X-Men,
X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine’s epic and
violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and
the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many
mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several
legends of the X-Men universe whose appearances in the film series
have long been anticipated.
WE SAY
You simply have to wonder about Hollywood sometimes!
For instance, who
were watching Tsotsi — the 2006 best foreign film winner about
socio-economic problems and violent crime in South Africa — and went:
“Hey, the guy who directed this should be perfect for directing a
blockbuster flick about a superhero with extreme side-whiskers and who
shoots retractable steel claws out of his hands!”
Anyway,
maybe there is method to the madness: perhaps South African director Gavin
Hood will prevent the flick from being a brainless actioner and being
more, well, human. Then again, the last time someone wanted to make a more
human drama out of a superhero comic we got Angst Lee’s
Hulk . . .
(This will be the first of several
X-Men spin-offs.)
